Did Manon Dave kidnap an orchestre?

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Right, it’s official. Manon Dave is a musical chameleon - one second he is releasing remixes of Britney Spears and Timbaland, next melancholy alternative pop, then some dirty electro-dub riddims and now a pseudo-classical composition entitle Trinity.

We have seen few who can boast such a diverse range of projects - even fewer who actually pull it off.

For the track “Stones” and indeed parts of “The Flood”, it sounds as though Manon actually kidnapped an orchestra and locked them in his studio. He assures us this is not the case - and after checking with the authorities we have no reason to doubt him.

In fact he has managed to reproduce these delicate sounds without live instruments, somehow capturing the essence of each instrument to paint an intricate and utterly pleasing canvas of string and wind. This just goes to show what is possible with modern sound production.

Review of Manon Daves “The Op” by Sean-Michael Yoder

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Superstar producer Manon Dave is responsible for some of the hottest dance floor remixes of today’s biggest artists from Lady Gaga to Maroon 5. On his latest single, just in time for the holidays, Dave does something completely unexpected and drops two wicked slabs of futuristic bass music. The good news is that both tracks are top notch, the kinds of cuts that would find a home at forward-thinking indie labels such as the UK’s Hyperdub. But with Manon Dave’s star power they are sure to find radio airplay in the US, providing a crucial bridge between the ocean of unheard quality underground tunes and elusive mainstream success.

“The Op” is a cheeky UK Funky cut with its subtle 8 bit squiggles, often overused in dubstep, here Dave employs it only as a shaded accent. The main attraction is the minor chorded piano riff, earthy and soulful with a hint of moodiness. The bass wobbles, so common to the genre, are muted giving the track more of a funky old school UK garage feel. Dave is all about big, clean sounds in his production work, never overwrought, and that’s exactly what distinguishes the good dubstep from bad.

On the flipside, “Thermology” recalls elements of mid-Nineties drum & bass with traces of cinematic texture that nicely touches upon the work of the electronica duo Badmarsh & Shri. It’s much more experimental than its A-side counterpart - but it still remains within the realm of the musical with soaring strings, a distinct bass line, and subdued jungle riddims. Overall, “Thermology” touches upon some decent retro vibes as well as uncharted new ideas striking a fine balance. Together, the two tracks make for a worthy release.
